With all the fund raising efforts of the local community, and the mountains of plans submitted by the Project Team to the Heritage National Lottery Panel, 2018 turned into 2019.
Finally, we were told that a member of the Judging Panel would be joining our Coffee morning on the 15th January 2019.
Excitement mounted as the date approached and we knew that an announcement would be made.
The announcement that Scarborough had been granted nearly £5m for the work on the gardens was greeted by a rapturous applause from over 100 members who were listening.
This is, as the Heritage Lottery Fund required, a community led project.
With the contribution of £105,000 raised by our Community Group, through pledges/contributions from the local community and others from far and wide, all interested in this project, a total of £7.25m is now available to fund the works to restore and develop the historic South Cliff Gardens.
The Cliff Stabilisation Project has delayed the commencement of works in the Gardens by a few months, but during November 2019, works will start in the gardens to remove or top many of the self-set trees that have grown and hidden the many views across Scarborough and the South Bay, that were originally planned to be seen and enjoyed by the Victorians.
Many new trees will then be planted across the whole site, but with controls to the type and growth rate being managed carefully, so that the magnificent views remain.
Work on the many shelters in the gardens, the footpaths and walls, together with new toilet facilities, new gardener and classroom facilities, and new areas for everyone to enjoy, including families with their children will be created. The area will become accessible to all.
The work will be carried out by specialist contractors, hopefully starting during mid-2020 and lasting about 12 months.
Keep up to date with 'What Comes Next' by watching out for our Newsletters as Victoria Thompson, HLF Gardens Project Manager to Scarborough Borough Council, regularly visits our group at main meetings to tell us about 'the next 3 months'
