On the  Horizon

"What do you think?"

On the Horizon
This page on our website will give details of various items of interest that may impact on our group area, and about which our members have had the opportunity to be updated at meetings and in Newsletters, and/or to make comment about during consultation processes.

Some of the items have links to enable you to view documents and, sometimes, to participate in the consultation.

South Cliff Stabilisation Project

With a significant threat to properties and businesses behind the Spa Complex, and of course to the Spa Complex itself, in the event of a major cliff slip, this is the most significant project that we will see in our area
.

In early February 2017 the project contractor, Balfour Beatty, started work to cut down the first line of trees, behind the Spa, in preparation for the full works to commence.

Visible signs of work then stopped as the formal planning application process moved on.

With main works commencing in May 2018, it is anticipated that the main works be finishing in February 2020.

There will be some repair work to roads and footpaths along the Esplanade before everything is fully open.

South Cliff / Filey Road Development

Broadlands Properties Ltd submitted a planning application in April 2019.

Following a significant number of objections from the public, the process has been not yet been decided. Because of the number and nature of the objections, work has to be carried out by the applicant before the matter can be brought to the Planning Committee for a decision.

We will advise our members, and also through this website and our social media, when the planning application is going to the Planning Committee, and subsequently of the planning decision.

The proposals and locations for developments are (quoted from leaflet below) -

"To provide a residential development of a higher specification than has been typical of many of the developments that have taken place within the town in the last decade or so, allied with the delivery of high-quality sporting facilities. Development is proposed across four sites.

1. The former Filey Road Sports Centre – Development of circa 50 high-quality market homes (houses and apartments), including the conversion of the existing Grade II Listed pavilion.

2. College Avenue – Development of 4 high-quality market homes.

3. College Avenue – Development of circa 6 tennis courts with parking.

4. Former Bramcote School Playing Field – Development of an athletics track and the conversion of the Grade II Listed pavilion to an ancillary sporting use."

Below is a leaflet about the consultation process, and an original plan of the proposed sports facilities on the former Bramcote School playing fields site.

As soon as we are able to release current plans etc we will do so.

Chalets near the Clock Cafe

Many people will have seen the collapse of the row of Chalets just below the Clock Cafe on the South Cliffs.
These are listed structures and their demise was due to the collapse of a retaining wall just above them.

Because of their listed status, the Borough Council weren't allowed to just pull them down, so safety fencing/netting was put in place during 2019 to protect anyone from injury/harm.

Finally the weather caused the chalets to fully collapse.

The Borough Council have recently made the decision to provide funding to stabilise the area, build a new retaining wall, and rebuild the chalets in heritage style with updated internal facilities.

As soon as specific plans and a timescale are announced, our members will be advised and this item will be updated.

Crescent Arts - Changing Rooms

A proposal for the redevelopment of the old bathing huts on the promenade, near to the Spa Complex, in the area known as Children's Corner.

CHANGING ROOMS is a joint venture between Crescent Arts and Leeds Beckett University to develop a brand new beachside visual arts, creativity and education resource in the disused sun bathing building near The Spa Complex in Scarborough’s South Bay.

Stuart Cameron, Director of Crescent Arts introduced the proposals to an earlier meeting of the South Cliff Community Group, before launching some workshop presentations in July.

Below is the advertising literature for the presentations, and whilst the workshops have ended, the description of the project will give an idea of what is proposed.

A decision about progressing this development and of any planning application will probably not be made until works are finished on the cliff stabilisation.
